Modern Literature:-
During Modern time community living turns to individual freedom. and also Barnad shaw rightly say that :-''Introgative habit of mind''Mind develop during the time social concerns are in centre, breaking down the traditional way of presentation.
Here is my interpretation of ten short poems with modern metaphor and symbols
Let's see some modernist poem :-
1.) ‘The Embankment‘- T. E. Hulme
Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,
In a flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.
Oh, God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.
Analysis:- Here in this poem ,there is some symbols like Gold heels ,old
star, eaten blanket of the sky etc.blanket of the sky in spirituality in poor condition.and fallen gentleman ,poet recounting experience.
2.) "Darkness" - Joseph Campbell
Darkness
I stop
to watch a star shine
in the
boghole -
A star
no longer, but a silver
ribbon of light.
I look
at it and pass on.
In this poem title itself suggest the darkside of the modern age.It reflects something dark side of nagativity.star shine is symbol of brightness and success and silver ribbon of light.but success and brightness may be not stay long time.
3.) 'Image' - Edward Storer
Forsaken lovers,
Burning to a
chaste white moon
Upon strange
Pyres of loneliness and
drought.
Here in this poem title ''Image'' present of modern people.and their way of living what man stand for peace but heart of lover are burning.White color use to positive sens but here use negative sens and other metaphor are loneliness drought.brokenness and sexual perveresion can give us life.
4)
4.) "In a station of the Metro" - Ezra
Pound
The apparition of these faces in
the Crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough
This entire poem based in basically single metaphor.comparision between human face and flawer petals.this poem title also suggested that station is quite busy and ''Faces in the crowd'' also reflects isolation and modern people life style and civilisation.so,pound use some natural imagery''black bough'' this image can not sight and touch.
5.) 'The Pool' - Hilda Doolittle
Are you alive?
I touch you
You quiver
trembling like a sea-fish
I cover you
with my net
What are you-
banded one?
Here this poem, poet to creat mental image of text appealing to the five sens of reader.here the poem appeals to touch, hearing and seeing. and this poem deals with war theme.
6.) "Insouciance" – Richard Aldington
In and out of the dreary trenches
Trudging cheerily under the stars
I make for
myself little poems
Delicate as a
flock of doves
They fly away
like white-winged
Doves.
In this poem has many different images ''Dreary trenches'' use as metaphor for the up and downs of life. Poet reflects this poetry ''Trudging cheerily under the star' poet living happily under the sky and also use metaphor 'Flock of doves.
7.) Morning at the Window - T. S. Eliot
They are rattling breakfast plates in basement
kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaid
Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.
In this poem poet tries to bring everyday life of people. Living in the city life.metaphor like ''rattling breakfast plates, trampled edges of the street.etc
The poem is striking image of poverty.mybe they come from villiage, they have no identity, dignity and mental life .they are despondent extremly sad.
8.) The Red Wheelbarrow -William Carlos Williams
so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chicken.
Wheelbarrow means a smallcart in single wheel.here poet present meaning barrow alone means an ancient burial mound, rain, water, symbolies.positive and nagative way of looking and Red wheel are used dual way of meaning.
9.) Anecdote of the Jar- Wallace Stevens
I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.
It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.
Anecdote of the Jar is a imagist poem.Superiority between art and nature. In nature superiar to human relation.here the jar as a symbol of the Imagination.
