‘’Midnight children ‘’ one of the most commended novel by Salman Rashdies.

We watched two movies ‘Midnight children’ and ‘Reluctant Fundamentalist’, after watching two movies better understanding for the term ‘’Post Colonial Studies’.post colonial  studies means

Post colonial studies is not negative term but holding both the things positive and negative also.so the help of the both the things .I can understand well that what is post colonial studies and how it used in this both movie.

Review:-

This movie ‘’Midnight children’’ whole story of the narrator named Saleem Sinai.In this story ,he is narrating his whole life through one story in based on his memory. Here in this movie Rushdie use many  element of post colonialism in his work. First is lack of a reliable narrator. And lack of totality that is the part of post colonial aspect here this movie Saleem is far from a totalizing narrator.  The compound story centers on two boys born in Bombay at midnight on Aug. 15, 1947, which is the moment India abrogated British rule. One infant is born into wealth; the other’s family is complicated, but he would ostensibly be raised by poor wandering musicians. Except the babies are swapped at birth.  In this movie one character Parvati is also try to use of magic realism in this movie. Magic realism is not rational world .and sometimes called Fabulism-it reference to conventions of fable ,myths and allegory. Magic realism most commonly used in literature and the portrays of magical and unreal element.

We can say that the movie is a story of two person first is Saleem and second is Siva .In this two names itself  suggest that  how religion play in vital role in Post colonial Studies. And itself talks  about two nations one India and Pakistan .During the war time when Saleem came to India   and he say that ‘’I am back to My India’’ because it suggest that belonging here. When novel begins his born in India and also he come to back in India it novel end. some people expected from India when India got Freedom and now days India condition very well.

Another element of Post Colonialism in Midnight Children how it is told from the indigenous point of view. The presence of the British is felt ,but the story itself, one is Partition and division.post colonial understanding of the work .Being able to relay the basis of partition as well as Emergency from an indigenous point of view is also reflective of the postcolonial elements of Midnight children. Rushdie wishes to another vision of the narrative into the discourse ,one that achieve voice and enhance dialogue. This  become, element of post colonialism in the novel.

Midnight children is much more interest to the reader interested in in post colonialism  ,possibly due to its strong element of Magic Realism.

Saleem, raised in the well to do family, narrates the story. Midnight’s Children is a constant and understated exploration of the connections among order, reality and fantasy Saleem thus becomes a representative figure of his generation, and to be more precise, of all the Indians. . The reflection of political and historical problem in magic realism renders it as a legitimate critique of colonialism and its attendant ideologies.

as a Postcolonial Device in Salman Rushdie‟s Midnight's Children’ is the core of part of the novel. This chapter falls into three sub topics. The first section deals with the postcolonial environments in Midnight's Children. The second sub topic shows how Rushdie links the literary device magic realism and the literary theory Postcolonialism. The last section of this chapter asserts the fact that magic realism is a postcolonial device.

Hybridity in Midnight Children:-

Hybridity is the mixture of two culture, religion or races .it can be social linguistic, religious ,etc. The novel’s social and culture hybridization, illustrated through the multitude of differing characters. These cultural and religious division clearly highlighted through Saleem’s relationship with Shiva and Parvati

Movie Review   Reluctant Fundamentalist:-

“The Reluctant Fundamentalist” by Mohsin Hamid, directed by Mira Nair This whole story about 9/ 11 attack, a movie about the impact on one man of the Al Qaida attacks and the American reaction to them. This movie is all about political controversy and 9/11 attack and American dream of Changez khan in idea of  East and West.

in the context of debates about US multiculturalism after 9/11. It suggests that while Hamid's novel undoubtedly identifies and critiques the racism at the heart of the so‐called war on terror – expressed both in domestic and foreign arenas – his text also appears to be seduced by certain aspects of American exceptionalism "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" follows the transformations of the wide eyed Pakistani Changez Khan, who arrives in the US with great professional ambitions. We find in the movie that all things are about power and superiority, here in Changez Khan’s case, he is becoming the part of circumstances, there is also other things that why all wrong things happened with him because belongs to Muslim Community? And so what his fault as  Muslim. American look at him as he is part of ‘Terrorist’.

In the context of colonizer and colonized equation, even E.M. Forster (A Passage to India) shows that love or friendship is not possible between the masters and subjects. Due to similar reasons, Dr. Aziz finally returns towards his own Indian identity. However, Hamid still believes in the possibility of a meaningful, positive relationship between America and the non-European world. Hamid’s narrative holds American culture and political policies responsible for pushing Changez on to the journey to disillusionment. Finally Changez drifts away from America. Inner   Fury by Kamala Markandayya  , where the racial difference strips away the mythical illusion that there can be any kind of rapprochement between the colonizer and the colonized. Hamid points his finger at America and American society and shows that everything is not perfect with it. He identifies the problems and flaws of the American culture.

Post colonial aspect in Movie:-

·       “Hegemony” – is the power of the ruling class to convince other classes that their interests are the interest of all domination by consent.(Changez: Certainley)

·       “Hybridity”- Hybridity has frequently been used in post-colonial discourse to mean simply cross cultural exchange. Hybridity commonly refers to the creation of new transcultural forms. And also hybridization takes many forms like cultural ,political, racial, etc

Cultural Hybridity-Changez drinks wine.

“East  vs West”- here in this movie different in east vs west. Changez (east-Pak), Erica(West-US). White &western superiority vs colored & colonial inferiority

·       Alterity (Otherness):-The state of being different or other. After 9/11 attack Changez fails to feel like he fits in as  part of his community.
