The Birthday Party Play by Herold Pinter
Here my interpretation regarding the play ‘’Birthday Party’’
‘’There are no hard distinctions between what is real and what is unreal ,nor between what is true and what is false,.A thing is not necessarily either true or false; it can be both true and false''. -Harold Pinter
The play ‘’Birthday Party’’ Pinter’s first full length play.In this play has allegory of artist and comedy of Menace is dramatic styles of writing .He gives some interpretation(image)of Social,political,and philosophical visual image in this play ‘’Birthday Party’’.
(1) Why are two scenes of Lulu omitted from the movie?
My point of view shows the reality of modern society.Lulu character is always inspiration of men .first we see that lulu talk to Stanley and she inspiration them.but that time Stanley ignore to lulu, may be lulu has become a prodtitude. And Lulu’s scene might
be omitted the reason that society may not accept those scene. And showing also such vulgar in movie in movie may creates problem. we find some meaningless activity in movie. And we find some effective and famous scene s in the interrogation scene also in several reason.
(2) Is movie successful in giving us the effect of menace? Where you able to feel it while reading the text?
It has been said that movie always provides better understanding rather than reading .The same result with the play ‘’Birthday Party’’.In reading you may not feel the same kind of fear and menace,the fear of unknown danger ,but while watching movie remain there and as well as in the mind of audience.The menace evolves from actual violence in the play or from an underlying sense of violence throughout the play.This feeling of ‘’Menace’’establishes a strong connection between character’s predicament and audience’s personal anxieties.
In this movie is successful in making of menace , we constantly remains in the fear that what the two stranger will do with Stanley,the sound of the paper torn out by McCann,the drum played by Stanley until the break it out. And the real menace ,in play arise in the Black out scene,imagine you are out of your home in dark night ,nothing is visible ,dark we feel more fear.and at the end the scene where all the harmful actions took place .Lulu seduced ,Stanley beaten etc..
(3) Do you feel the effect of lurking danger while viewing the movie? Where you able to feel the same while reading the text
Yes , I feel the lurking danger while viewing the movie. I feel that something will happen. when suddenly knocking happen ,feel the effect of lurking danger,but not in the text. In that newspaper it is symbolically to hide the reality.
(3) Do you feel the effect of lurking danger while viewing the movie? Where you able to feel the same while reading the text
Yes , I feel the lurking danger while viewing the movie. I feel that something will happen. when suddenly knocking happen ,feel the effect of lurking danger,but not in the text. In that newspaper it is symbolically to hide the reality.
(4) What do you read in 'newspaper' in the movie? Petey is reading newspaper
to Meg, it torn into pieces by McCain, pieces are hidden by Petey in last
scene.
In the very beginning of
the play we see the one of the old character in the play,petey is reading news
paper.this news paper reading as a
technique used by many writer to hide the face,in this way hiding self from the
reality.McCann signifies the insignicant
of the news paper, it also signify that petey is helpless against the two
strangers,tearing out of the character.
(5) Camera
is positioned over the head of McCain when he is playing Blind Man's Buff
and is positioned at the top with a view of room like a cage (trap) when
Stanley is playing it. What interpretations can you give to these
positioning of camera?
While viewing the film camera speaks everything .when camera is
positioned over the head of McCann when he is playing Blind man’s Buff which
shows that McCann is power position and top with a view of room like a cage
(trap) when Stanley is playing it which means Stanley is caged by two unknown
strangers.we understood that Stanley is going to kick him. And we can seen as
artist Webber is restricted by society.

its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue, where
people are at the mercy of one another and pretense crumbles." (Pinter, Art, Truth & Politics: Excerpts
from the 2005 Nobel Lecture).
Yes I agree with this point it happen in the movie as while
movie use only single small room.in this movie
in many political and social context.it read Pinter’s biographical
reading we found that many scenes say that political games, and society has to
bad and not any place of artist in
society.
- (7)· How does viewing movie help in better understanding of the play ‘The Birthday Party’ with its typical characteristics (like painteresque, pause, silence, menace, lurking danger)?
- Pinter known for his use of writing play techniques like Pintresque, pause,Silence,lurking danger and menace etc. In this all techniques are use in this play and better understood by the film,than reading the text.because of visual effects more effective than reading the text. And read the play may be better visual of characters and dual quality gives in the play and how film has to better understand the play.
(8) If I am screenplay writer or
director.I have only change of this film ‘’The Birthday Party’’ in this play
Lulu has to inspiration of artist.but I changing of that lulu inspiration of Stanley bad thinks and lulu work as
detective agents. She is know about that
Stanley,end of Lulu, Goldberg,McCann all
as friend and work together in detective agents Lulu has to arrest Stanley know
about to lulu has detective agents and Stanley rape to lulu.

McCann –Arjun Kapoor
